Why Your Chiro Did a Barista Training Course (Stay With Me Here)

So. I did a barista training course.

I can hear you already. "Lindy, you're a chiropractor. What are you doing learning to pull shots?" Fair question. Let me explain, because there's a method to the madness.

Somewhere along the way I got properly interested with coffee. Not in a "I'll have a flat white thanks" way, but in a "why does this cup taste incredible and that one tastes like sad dishwater" way. So I went and learned. The roasting, the extraction, the grind size, the water temperature, the little details that turn good beans into a genuinely beautiful cup.

And here's the thing that got me. All of that is science. There's chemistry happening, there are variables, there are numbers. But knowing the science doesn't automatically make you a great barista.

The magic is in the feel. The art of it. Two people can have the exact same beans and the same machine, and one cup just sings.

Which is the most chiropractic thing I've ever heard.

Because chiropractic is a science. We spend years buried in anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, histology, radiology, pathology, all of it. We know the human body inside and out. But the actual skill, the adjusting, the hands on a spine? That's an art just as much as it's a science. It's why two chiropractors can feel completely different to be adjusted by. The goal is the same, the outcome can be similar, but the art of how we get there is our own.

And the art has a purpose. When we adjust you, we're not just popping a joint to get a bit more movement. We're talking to your nervous system.

Here's the quick version. That adjustment fires up the little sensors in your joints (your mechanoreceptors). They send a signal racing up to your brain. Your brain takes that information in, has a think about it, and sends instructions back down to your muscles and tissues. So the real change isn't happening at the joint. It's happening because your brain is now directing the show.

That's the loop. Sensor in, brain processes, body responds. And when that loop runs the way it should, your body can start making proper lasting change. Better movement patterns, muscles that switch on and off at the right time, calmer tissues, the works.

So no, I'm not swapping the clinic for a café. But that course reminded me why I love what I do. The science gives us the map. The art is how we actually get you there. Sometimes the science is literally a piece of kit, like our MLS laser, doing the quiet work in the background, while the art is in knowing when and how to use it.

So where does all this art and science actually show up?

Behind every adjustment is a real person with something going on. These are some of the things people come and see us for:

  • Pregnancy and postnatal care: supporting your body through the aches, pelvic discomfort and postural changes that come with a growing bump, and the recovery afterwards

  • Arthritis-related stiffness: this is where the science really earns its keep. Alongside hands on care, we often use MLS laser therapy to help manage the stiffness and discomfort that can come with arthritic joints, so you can keep moving more comfortably

  • Posture and stress tension: the neck, shoulder and back tightness that builds up from long days at the desk and a busy head

  • Shoulder and hip pain: from annoying niggles to injuries that are getting in the way of how you move

  • Sporting injuries: including tendinopathy (tendinitis) and the overuse strains that come with staying active

  • Plantar fasciitis: that stubborn heel and foot pain that makes the first few steps of the morning a misery

  • Post-surgical recovery: supporting your rehab alongside your surgeon and medical team once you've been cleared

We've got clinics in Baulkham Hills and Windsor, so wherever you are across the Hills and the Hawkesbury, there's a team nearby.

A few things people ask us

Can a chiropractor help during pregnancy?

Plenty of expecting mums come to see us for help with the aches, pelvic discomfort and postural changes that come with a growing bump. We tailor everything to where you're at in your pregnancy.

Can chiropractic help with arthritis?

We can't make arthritis disappear, but we can support you to move more comfortably and manage the stiffness that often comes with it. For a lot of our arthritis clients, MLS laser therapy is a key part of that. It's a genuinely science-backed tool we lean on to help settle things down and support the body, and it pairs beautifully with the hands on side of what we do.

Do you help after surgery?

Yes. We work alongside your medical team to support your recovery once you've been cleared to start rehab.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a cup to perfect.
